35 million years ago quartz mineral fossilized the wood of dead roots and converted it into petrified wood. In this case, the former rings were opened and hollow spaces were formed on which the quartz crystal could grow. The site is no longer accessible and lies several meters below the ground water level in the Brown Coal Open Pit, Zwenkau, Leipzig, Saxony Germany.
