Many people do not realize that mammals have actually been on the Earth for ~ 210 million years. They were small creatures, living quietly in the shadows for 145 million years as dinosaurs ruled our planet. It wasn't until a gigantic asteroid impact combined with simultaneous super volcano eruptions, which spewed noxious sulfuric gases into the atmosphere made Earth's climate and environment too inhospitable for dinosaurs. However, with the demise of dinosaurs mammals finally had their opportunity to come out of their hidings, grow and flourish.
