Quick Overview

When we came across this sphere, we couldn't help but say WOW! The pockets or shimmering deep red astrophyllite are large, taking up majority of the sphere (minimal matrix). The red portions have reflective copper colored striations throughout, caused by the blade-like crystal structure.

Measurements: ~2-1/2" diameter

More Information

Astrophyllite is a rare silicate mineral composed of potassium, iron, titanium, manganese, and sodium. It was originally discovered by Paul Christian Weibye in Norway in 1844, then recognized by the scientific community in 1854 when it was given its official name “Astrophyllite”. Carl Johan August Theodor Scheerer chose the name based on the combination of the greek words “astron” and “phyllon” which mean “star” and “leaf”. It is mostly found in Russia, Greenland, China, Norway, and the United States.
