Halite refers to a rock primarily composed of sodium chloride- otherwise known as “rock salt”. The Halite that we typically carry is from Searles Lake, California. Searles lake is 5 times saltier than sea water! Pink Halite gets its color from halobacteria from the lake, and green Halite gets its color from the algae in the lake. Because Halite is water soluble, it must never be exposed to water or high humidity.

After collecting fossils as a hobby for many years growing up, Dave Douglass opened Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop in 1970 at the age of 20 (with the help of his parents) at 1312 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The shop contained minerals and fossils, mostly self-collected by the Douglass family.
