The name Jade is shared by two distinctly different minerals: Nephrite, a calcium magnesium silicate and Jadeite, a sodium aluminum silicate. These are metamorphic minerals with vibrant green colors caused by the presence of chromium. Jade has been utilized by man since the beginning of civilization in Asia, Central and South America. Metaphysically, it is believed that Jade strengthens the body during life, and protects one after death.
After collecting fossils as a hobby for many years growing up, Dave Douglass opened Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop in 1970 at the age of 20 (with the help of his parents) at 1312 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The shop contained minerals and fossils, mostly self-collected by the Douglass family.
