Isurus hastalis were ancestors of Mako and Great white Sharks. They existed in the Miocene epoch to the Pleistocene epoch approximately 23 million years ago, and fossils are often found while scuba diving in Florida's coastal waters. Modern Mako sharks (the shortfin mako) is the fastest shark in the world, swimming up to 43 MPH.
After collecting fossils as a hobby for many years growing up, Dave Douglass opened Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop in 1970 at the age of 20 (with the help of his parents) at 1312 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The shop contained minerals and fossils, mostly self-collected by the Douglass family.
