Tagua Nut, also known as Vegan Ivory, is a product made from the very hard white endosperm of the seeds of certain palm trees. Species in the genus Phytelephas, native to South America, are the most important sources of the Tagua trees or elephant trees. Also known as “Phytelephas macrocarpas”, this palm tree grows in the tropical mountains of South America. It needs a lot of rain to grow and produces the fruit “mococha” which contains the Tagua nut in clusters.
After collecting fossils as a hobby for many years growing up, Dave Douglass opened Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop in 1970 at the age of 20 (with the help of his parents) at 1312 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The shop contained minerals and fossils, mostly self-collected by the Douglass family.
