Many of the best fossilized pine cones are from Patagonia, Argentina. Mostly, they come from two types of trees in that region: Araucaria and Pararaucaria are extinct coniferous trees that could have grown up to 330 feet tall! The trees were buried about 180 million years ago (Jurassic Period), during a volcanic eruption in the area.
After collecting fossils as a hobby for many years growing up, Dave Douglass opened Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop in 1970 at the age of 20 (with the help of his parents) at 1312 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The shop contained minerals and fossils, mostly self-collected by the Douglass family.
