Quick Overview

This is a unique arrangement of sea urchins in matrix. These urchins lose their spines very quickly after they die, so all urchin fossils are prepared (composites) by attaching fossilized spines to the base of the urchins. This is an interesting and aestheticlly pleasing fossil to add to any collection.

More Information

Echinoids are marine animals that burrow beneath the sea bed searching for algae, plants, and small organisms. They use their spines to move through sediment in the ocean floor. These animals have lived in the sea since the Late Ordovician time period (450 MYO), even before dinosaurs appeared on earth. Fossilized sea urchins closely resemble modern day urchins, giving us a glimpse into how they survived over millions of years.
