Phases of the Moon consists of Mother of Pearl and black mussel shell. Mother of Pearl is an organic-inorganic composite material produced by some molluscs as an inner shell layer and makes up the outer coating of pearls. The material is strong, resilient, and iridescent. The black mussel shell is finely polished until the texture is smooth and shiny.
After collecting fossils as a hobby for many years growing up, Dave Douglass opened Dave's Down to Earth Rock Shop in 1970 at the age of 20 (with the help of his parents) at 1312 Chicago Avenue in Evanston, Illinois. The shop contained minerals and fossils, mostly self-collected by the Douglass family.
