More Information
Aragonite is a calcium carbonate mineral that forms in orthorhombic crystals. It is the main component of many other organic materials, such as pearl and coral. The iridescent characteristics of pearls are actually formed by layers of aragonite. Other minerals may also be forms of pseudomorphs of Aragonite, such as Calcite pseudomorphs after Aragonite. The mineral was named by the location in which it was first found (Aragón, Spain). It is often found in deposits of hot springs in colorless stalactites. It is a soft mineral rating at 3-4 on the Mohs scale.
