Smithsonite is a rare zinc carbonate mineral found in the oxidation zone of zinc ore deposits. It's highly valued by collectors in botryoidal form. The mineral is named after James Smithson, a chemist, mineralogist, and founding donor of the well-known Smithsonian Institution.
