More Information

Scutella fossils are calcified remains of marine echinoderms (starfish, crinoids, sea urchins). They existed during the Miocene Epoch about 20-12 million years ago. The name scutella originates from the Latin "scutum", which means sheild. It refers to the hard, chitin-calcite plates that formed the animal's exoskeleton.
