Translated from ancient Greek the word Dinosaur means "Terrible Lizard". However, dinosaurs were not lizards. There were significant differences between the two. (Although lizards did indeed live during the same time period.) One main differential was the positioning of the animal's legs. A lizard's legs sprawl outward away from its body, but a dinosaur's legs were positioned directly beneath its body mass, giving the animal the ability to support itself more steadily and the ability to walk many miles in a day. This was important because as they depleted an area of food a herd was then able to search elsewhere for sustenance. Overall, a dinosaur's bone structure was significantly different than a lizard's, being lighter and yet configured in a manner which allowed many of them to stand upright while simultaneously supporting their massive weight.

Roaming the Earth from the Triassic time period (~230 mya) until the end of the Cretaceous time period (~66 mya), Dinosaurs became the dominating life force on the planet and were an extremely diverse and successful species for ~135 million years. Their demise is thought to have begun when a gigantic asteroid / meteor impacted the earth in the Yucatan Peninsula. That impact along with the atmospheric contamination it created caused tremendous environmental changes to our planet. It is also theorized that super volcanoes were erupting simultaneously across the planet, spewing hot ash and sulphuric gases into the Earth's atmosphere, thereby contributing to this cataclysmic event.
